Back in 2011 Dr Oliver Sutherland presented a paper at the Ngata Memorial Lectures about the close relationship between his dad, Professor Ivan Sutherland and Sir Apirana Ngata. Paikea was originally published in 2013. He describes the relationship between Ivan and Apirana as a powerful partnership – Ngata an outstanding political figure and Ivan, a pakeha who got close with him and shared his vision. This year Dr Oliver Sutherland decided to republish his lecture on this very special relationship.
