Earlier this year Nga Tamatoa members celebrated the group’s 52-year history. Nga Tamatoa was a group of Maori youth who were offended by the confiscation of Maori land and the degradation of Maori language. They organised and lobbied the teaching of Maori language in schools and they organised the 1975 Land March led by Dame Whina Cooper. This morning we spoke with Nga Tamatoa foundation member, Josie Keelan, who put myths about Nga Tamatoa to rest and spoke on the recent protest in Poneke.
