50 years of collecting and collating whakapapa and local korero by author Lloyd Lawson culminated in the launch of The History of Wharekahika – Hicks Bay Revisited.
“50 years of gathering information for this huge work , 50 years of listening to the elders of this area” Lloyd Lawson (Author)
Over 100 whanau gathered at Hinemaurea marae to witness the launch of his accomplishment,
“The History of Wharekahika – Hicks Bay revisited”.
“The people are very lucky that these histories have been recorded and written into this book, because there are a lot of people who don’t know these stories, their parents and grandparents did not hand down this knowledge to them. But Lloyd collected and collated their information into this book as a gift to the people” – Te Raunikau Stainton (Wharekahika Elder)
“This book is a precious resource, a resource for the students of the schools, a resource for the families that live here, because it was their ancestors that gave this knowledge to Lawson”
– Kingston Cooper Local Resident
