Our first flagship Maori language news programme Te Karere celebrates it’s 40th birthday. The first bulletin aired on 21 February in 1982. It was quite revolutionary, because you could count the number of Maori faces on television back then on one hand. Te Karere produced stories of the day not only in Maori, but from a Maori perspective. Te Karere’s creator veteran broadcaster Derek Fox recalls the early days and how far it’s come since then.
