In 2007 the remains of over 50 people from Mangarara were uncovered at Tolaga Bay Area School following some reconstruction work. Further research found they had all died from a flu epidemic. Hineteariki Parata-Walker, uri no Ngati Porou, no Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti, was a student there when the koiwi were uncovered in the heart of the school grounds. She says we can learn through the story of Mangarara and the impact this foreign disease had on a people with no natural immunity to it.
